The author Steven Mizener threw himself from the highest spot he could find in which to stand comfortably among the knotted branches and ivy vines, plunging headlong into that shimmering spot of blackness called "The Big Dismal," expecting to vanish completely in an instant, only to reemerge sputtering and shuddering in the cold, disappointed again, a few moments later.

It was then for the first time that evening he noticed the full moon hanging like a mirror, silvery and inscrutable, directly overhead: the most beautiful sight he'd seen in years, his mind now racing in strange new directions, forgetting its original purposes completely...
